Having started in 1961 as a small mechanical workshop, Brembo has specialised since the mid-1960s in the production of brake discs and calipers. In a very short space of time it grew to become official supplier to Ferrari and to the leading automobile and motorcycle racing teams. An absolute global landmark in the braking systems industry, Brembo transformed a mechanical component so successfully into “a sculpture with outstanding performances” as to win the prestigious Compasso d’Oro design award twice. The company operates in 15 countries on 3 continents and relies on the services of over 12,000 people. Of these, a considerable number (about 10%) are engineers and specialists involved in research and development.

“There is one episode in our history that marked the future of the company and which, if looked at in perspective, gives us a certain sense of destiny: a truck coming from England and carrying a load of brake discs for Alfa Romeo crashed. At the time, disc brakes were only manufactured by the British, and Alfa Romeo, in order to repair the damage, asked Brembo to mend the damaged parts. Chance and luck can help, but you have to be able to take advantage of certain opportunities: we therefore decided to try to produce the discs in Italy ourselves, at more competitive prices.”

“Brembo was founded in 1961, just a few kilometres from Bergamo. It was established by my father Emilio, Italo Breda, myself and my brother Sergio. We were a small company and in the early years the company was known as OMDS, Officine Meccaniche di Sombreno. Back then, we worked on mechanical processing for third parties. From that background, an extraordinary business adventure unfolded that has made Brembo an outstanding Italian and international brand that has become synonymous with brakes the world over.”

The development of the caliper (like the special carbon discs) was specially adapted to the requirements of a fully electric single-seater. It is consequently the most advanced result of an intensive drive to achieve ever better performance and lightness. It weighs just 965 grams. Over the years, we have been guided by a strong passion for our work. We have been able to transform a mechanical component such as the brake into an identifying and distinctive element for the world’s most iconic vehicles, both on the road and on the track. A result based on a simple yet revolutionary conviction: a product can be beautiful as well as functional. A concept that is part of the rich expression of Italian design and know-how, the product of a strong tradition of craftsmanship.

“If it wasn’t a brake, it would be a sculpture worthy of any modern art museum”: this was the reasoning of the international jury that awarded the Compasso d’Oro in 2004 to our braking system with carbon-ceramic disc for cars. In 2020, we received the world’s most prestigious industrial design award for the second time, which is a source of great satisfaction and demonstrative of our dedication to excellence, both aesthetically and in terms of performance. We won it thanks to our rear calliper for the Formula E electric championship single-seaters.
